Volkswagen to launch four CMP platform compact electric cars

Recently, Volkswagen Group officially announced that it will invest 2.5 billion euros to further expand its production and innovation center in Hefei, strengthen local research and development capabilities, and speed up the production of two Volkswagen brand smart electric models jointly developed by the group and Xpeng Motors. Volkswagen (China) Technology Co., Ltd. located in Hefei is the hub for implementing product localization and will work closely with Volkswagen Group's joint ventures in China to undertake core development tasks. The company is developing Volkswagen's first electric vehicle architecture (CMP) specifically for the Chinese market. From 2026, the group will rely on this platform to develop no less than four electric models for the compact entry-level market.

Volkswagen Group stated that it will develop entry-level models for the A-class mainstream market based on the CMP platform. The MEB platform will be upgraded to the MEB+ platform to achieve faster charging speeds, longer cruising range relying on standard batteries, and greatly improved autonomous driving functions. At the same time, the Volkswagen Group will develop fuel vehicle and plug-in hybrid vehicle solutions based on MQB EVO and MLB EVO.

Previously, the Volkswagen Group announced its future product plan: before 2027, Volkswagen will bring 11 new electric vehicles, including two models jointly built with Xpeng Motors, which are expected to be officially launched in 2026; in addition, the Volkswagen ID. 2all will be released in 2025 and available in 2026. In addition, Volkswagen will also bring a new entry-level model "ID.1" in 2025, which will be officially launched in 2027. By 2030, the group's brands will provide more than 30 pure electric models in the Chinese market.

"The first SUV jointly produced by Volkswagen and Xpeng"

In addition to ID.BUZZ LWB, ID.7, ID.7 Tourer, ID.GTI Concept, and ID.2all models, Volkswagen will also bring ID.2all SUV, entry-level E-Volkswagen, ID.4 PA, A-Main SUVe and two products jointly built with Xpeng are currently named VW/Xpeng 1 and VW/Xpeng 2 respectively. Volkswagen and Xpeng jointly create their first model, a mid-sized pure electric SUV, which will be launched in 2026.
